About Niulankeng Rou Gui Tea (牛栏坑肉桂)

It should be noted that although Rou Gui (肉桂) namely Cinnamon Oolong Tea is a historically famous rock tea (a type of oolong tea), it is the name of a tea cultivar from Wuyi Mountain in Fujian Province, China, which is named after the cultivar. It is of high quality, has a unique aroma and is one of the rarest varieties of rock tea. The early harvest has a frankincense (a resin from a tree in the Boswellia genus of the family Acanthaceae, native to the Middle East, East Africa and India), while the late harvest has a distinct cinnamon aroma and a fresh, mellow taste.

Among Rou Gui Tea, the Niulankeng Rou Gui (牛栏坑肉桂) produced in Niulankeng became famous as "beef", and for ordinary tea lovers, Niulankeng Rou Gui has become a luxury item of Wuyi Rock Tea. Therefore, Wuyi Rock Tea connoisseurs began to look for alternatives to beef, and the various "meats" of Wuyi Rock Tea were dug out one by one. Besides beef, there is horse meat, mutton, pork, tiger meat, lion meat, eagle meat, cat meat, even demon meat and dragon meat.

Horse meat refers to the rock Rou Gui Tea of the Horse Head Mountain, with its unique and presentable taste, to win over tea lovers, and the fame of horse meat is no less than that of beef.

According to incomplete statistics, the overall Niulankeng Rou Gui cultivation area is said to be about 50 acres and managed by more than 10 tea farmers, and it is not only the quality but also the limited yield that makes the price of this tea soar. The complexity of the process also adds extra labour and utility costs to the price. Therefore, there are many fakes using this name in the market, and to buy Niulankeng Rou Gui Tea, you not only need to have enough money, but also tasting skills to spot the real thing. If you are not familiar with rock tea, it may be difficult.
